2/9/2010  District issues snow makeup plan

The district’s Leadership Team met with the school principals on Monday and here are the plans  that emerged from that meeting related to snow makeup days as we progress through the ‘second semester’:

1)       As you already know, the days missed on December 18, January 6 and January 8 (All were optional workdays) will be made up on February 22, April 2 and May 31 (Early Dismissal).

2)       The day we missed on February 1 (annual leave day) will be made up on Friday, March 26.  The protected workday scheduled for Friday, March 26 will be moved to the next day, Saturday, March 27 (No students in school; leave an option for those who have it available).

3)       The missed day on last Friday, February 5 will be made up on Saturday, February 27.  This will be an early dismissal day (Elementary –noon and grades 6-12, 1:00 p.m. ---lunch will be served).

4)       Our basic plan going forward is to makeup any additional inclement weather days in Asheville City Schools on Saturday in the week in which the school day was missed, weather permitting.

5)       Therefore, if we miss tomorrow and/or Wednesday, February 9/10---and that is looking more likely [especially Wednesday] with each updated weather forecast---and/or other day(s) this week, we will go to school on this Saturday, February 13 (early dismissal), weather permitting. The missed day(s) would carry a ‘Closed’ status, meaning that no employees (except essential custodial staff) report to work.

6)       Depending on the number of days we miss going forward, please keep in mind that it may become necessary to utilize days from Spring Break (in reverse order beginning with Friday, April 9) and to add days to the end of the school calendar, once all other options are exhausted.

NOTE: Any school days made up during Spring Break week would be full school days.

Superintendent Allen Johnson thanked parents and staff for their input last week. “There are no really good options when it comes to trying to make up days during this difficult winter. Our parents and staff have indicated that Saturday school is our preference and that is the track we are taking at this point and time.”
