The Asheville City Board of Education met for 72 minutes on Monday evening, focusing on the final review and approval of the district’s new 3-year strategic plan and a 30-minute Good News segment including a presentation from the Asheville City Schools Foundation about their Fellows Program. The Pledge of Allegiance was led in both English and Spanish by five Ira B. Jones students. The Board had visited Jones earlier in the day, where they were treated to an outstanding lunch and several pertinent updates from teachers at the Global Scholars magnet school.
After approving five consent items and hearing Good News, the Board heard public comment from parent and former administrator, Jocelyn Reese, who spoke about a number of positive changes at Asheville Middle School. A presentation from a parent and two doctors followed, as each made a case for reinstating outdoor recess to the Middle School day. The Board also held first reading of Policy Code 4331: Assaults, Threats, Harassment and Hazing and Policy Code – 6305: Safety and Student Transportation Services. Both are available on this site for review.
The meeting concluded with the monthly employment of personnel report and the introduction of new Asheville High Assistant Principal, Jan Thomas.
The next scheduled Board meeting is Monday, December 3, 2012.
