Dear Parents and Friends of Vance,

It would be hard to explain (in the small space allotted me to type) how happy I am to be the principal of Vance Elementary School!  This is an extraordinary place where each child is valued, nurtured, challenged and engaged.  Learning is active and meaningful as teachers incorporate technology, garden projects, interest groups, field trips, real life experiences, authentic audiences, etc. into daily lessons. 

I am beginning my 28^th year in Asheville City Schools. Needless to say, I love this community and school system.   I started in 1982 as the Choral Director at Hill Street and Hall Fletcher Middle Schools.  When both middle schools merged to form the present Asheville Middle School, I continued to teach chorus there for 1 ½ years before becoming an assistant principal there.  Wanting an elementary experience, I moved to Randolph Elementary as assistant principal and then to Vance.  In 2002, the principal retired and I was fortunate enough to be named the new Vance principal.  My dad, mom, sister and daughter are also educators.  No family get together is without conversations about kids and education! 

What an honor it is to have families partner with us in the education of their children.  We view this as an opportunity to continue our own learning and growth, striving to implement best practice and research based strategies that lead to increased student achievement and success for all children as 21^st century learners.
