  • Book character pumpkins!

Posted by Kirsten LeClerc on 10/26/2020 4:00:00 PM

It's been a tradition for the last few years for students to decorate pumpkins and bring them into the library to display. Pictures are almost as good as seeing them in person! Here are some creative pumpkins from Cash (Percy Jackson), Essie (Sister Bear), and Maya (Harry Potter). Thanks for sharing these!Percy Jackson pumpkin

  • Our Media Center

The Lucy S. Herring Media Center's mission is to support the school's curriculum and foster a love of reading. The library is both fixed and flexibly scheduled to best meet the needs of students. Kindergarten through second grade classes come to the Media Center once a week for book check out and lessons. Third through fifth grade classes are flexibly scheduled to come to the library. Our library provides access to print, digital, and makerspace resources that support the curriculum.

    Volunteers

We love having volunteers in our library! We can always use help shelving books or assisting during K-2 library time. We also welcome volunteers during our Scholastic book fairs.

    Battle of the Books

Vance Battle of the Books Team

4th and 5th grade students are invited each year to be a part of the Battle of the Books team. Students are required to read 8 of the 15 books on the NC list in order to participate. We read, discuss, and practice questions about the books from November through March. The district competition will take place in early April. During both the 2018 and 2019 competitions, the Vance team won the Sportsmanship trophy!

The ACS 2020 Elementary EBOB list is out! Please note: the ACS list has some different titles from the NC state list. We opted to make the list more diverse with more current titles.

    Author Visits

Alan Gratz visit   Jan Brett visit

We are so lucky to have two wonderful local bookstores in Asheville! Malaprop's and Spellbound have enabled us to have several wonderful author visits over the last few years. Our students have been able to meet Jan Brett, Ben Hatke, Alan Gratz, Grace Lin, Stacy McAnulty, and Barbara O'Connor. The experience of having authors speak to students about their writing has been priceless! We love our local bookstores!
