Shelly Burlew, Mental Health Assistant
My name is Shelly G. Burlew. I moved to Asheville in 1998 from the Myrtle Beach, SC area and have never wanted to leave. I serve as a Mental Health Assistant in our primary school and pre-school. I provide one-on-one and classroom support around social and emotional strategies to help kids be successful academically. I have a B.S. in Psychology, a M.A. in Community Counseling. I’ve worked a few years in the community providing counseling and social work services, but my place is in education. I was an Elementary School Counselor for 2 years and a High School Counselor for 10 years (whew, glad that’s over! Teenagers!). I have a daughter named Jayla, 11yr old and a half- black lab/ half-dachshund dog named Captain Niles, 8yr old. We like to walk, camp, float down a river, music festivals and spending time with friends and family.
This is my second year at APS. I adore our students and could not hold the staff and administration of a school in any higher regard.
