Principal, Derek Edwards
I grew up on a large farm in northwestern North Carolina. I attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, University of Tennessee, and Western Carolina University where I earned my Master's in School Administration. It was my pleasure to teach high school mathematics for over nine years at the William Randolph Alternative School. I then became an Assistant Principal at Vance Elementary before joining the Claxton family in the Fall of 2015. I am honored to journey through life with my loving wife, Amanda, and my son, Wade. We live in Weaverville with our dog, Charlie, and nearly 20 chickens, mostly named after Disney princesses.
Assistant Principal, Mary Nichols
I am orginally from Rome, Georgia and I received my B.F.A. from the University of Georgia. I taught middle school art for 3 years outside of Atlanta before moving to Fort Collins, Colorado, where I lived for 9 years. I earned two master's degrees in both Educational Leadership from Colorado State University and Gifted Education from the University of Northern Colorado. I was the Gifted Education Curriculum Coordinator in Fort Collins for 5 years, and then I moved on to be the Principal/Director of Rivendell School. In 2015, my family moved to Asheville, and I worked at Asheville Middle School as one of two AIG Specialists during the 15-16 school year. I live in Asheville with my husband, Justin, 6-year-old Hazel and 4-year-old Hank and wonder-dog, Otis. My office door is always open, so please don't hesitate to stop in and introduce yourself. I have loved working with all the wonderful students and parents that support our school in so many ways.
