Asheville High School Gym Floor Dedication to Coach Vette
Asheville High School is proud to announce the dedication of its newly renovated gymnasium floor to Coach Vette, (Sonita Warren-Dixon) a beloved figure and highly respected Asheville City Schools Athletic Director. This special ceremony took place on Friday, January 3rd, in the Asheville High School gym.
Coach Vette's unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership have left an enduring legacy on Asheville High School’s athletic programs. With a remarkable 34-year career at Asheville City Schools, Coach Vette has made a significant impact on high school athletics in Western North Carolina. She has coached basketball, volleyball, track, field hockey, and softball at Asheville High School, leading our cougars to countless victories.
“Coach Vette is an institution in ACS. Her student-centered decision-making and passion for all sports shine in all that she does. I truly appreciate her dedication to the students, families, and the overall community of ACS. We are fortunate to have her in our Cougar Crew,” says Dr. Maggie Fehrman, Asheville City Schools Superintendent.
Coach Vette took over as Asheville’s boys basketball coach in 2011, becoming one of the first Black women to coach a boys team in the NCHSAA. In 2019, she was named Asheville’s athletic director, becoming the first Black woman to serve the role in Western North Carolina.
“I am humbled and blessed to be honored in this manner. This gym is the place that holds so many inspirational moments with so many incredible student athletes and coaches. This is the recognition and validation of all our hard work and dedication to this basketball program over the years," says Sonita Warren-Dixon, or better known to everyone as Coach Vette.
