Asheville City Schools is thrilled to announce that Blair Johnston of Asheville Middle School, has been named the 2026 ACS Principal of the Year! A dedicated member of our Cougar Crew for 18 years, Blair's commitment to student success is evident in his outstanding leadership.

Blair was celebrated at our annual Convocation and was recognized for his collaborative approach to building a strong school community. His leadership was especially vital following the impacts of Hurricane Helene, when he immediately reported to AMS and worked tirelessly to support his staff and students, helping them navigate an extraordinary and challenging time.

Johnston expressed his gratitude for this recognition, stating, “I’m so thankful for this recognition, but even more thankful to be part of a district that means so much to me. Our students, families, and community are the heart of everything we do, and I feel lucky every day to serve alongside such dedicated educators. This truly is my dream job, and I'm grateful to have a chance to make a difference in a place I love.”

Asheville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Maggie Fehrman praised Johnston's leadership, saying, “Blair Johnston distinguishes himself as a leader of leaders. His dedication to doing what is best for students and his ability to build positive relationships with his students, staff, and families are central to his leadership. Blair's reflective nature and ability to create collective impact made him a natural choice as the ACS Principal of the Year.”
