Tracey Barrett Named North Carolina History Teacher of the Year

Asheville City Schools is thrilled to announce that Asheville High School Social Studies teacher, Tracey Barrett, has been named the 2026 North Carolina History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History!

Ms. Barrett is known for her experiential approach to learning and her collaboration with educators. Building off the work of fellow teacher, Jessica Williams, students in both classes participated in a Black History Walking Tour that explores historic landmarks downtown, including Stephens-Lee High School and the Haywood St. Fresco. Ms. Barrett and Ms. Williams also regularly host elected officials in their classrooms so students can engage directly with leaders and make their voice heard. Ms. Barrett's dedication to hands-on learning and civic engagement is unparalleled.

As a proud 2008 Asheville High School alumna, Ms. Barrett returned to her alma mater to teach and is a celebrated educator and committed leader in our district. Honored as Asheville High’s 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year, she also holds a seat on the Asheville City Schools Foundation Board of Directors and is an active member of the Asheville City Association of Educators (ACAE), championing public education locally and at the state level.

As North Carolina’s state honoree, she receives a $1,000 award and is now a finalist for the National History Teacher of the Year title. Please join us in congratulating Ms. Barrett on this extraordinary honor.
