Asheville Middle School Athletic Field Update - 5.24.19

May 24, 2019

Dear Asheville Middle School Families,

Our first day of testing is now complete. We are always proud of our Cougar Scholars, and today I am sure they did their best on their Science Exam.

Don’t forget that there is no school for staff or students on Monday, May 27th. On Tuesday, we will have a normal schedule. We will resume testing on Wednesday, May 29th with all students taking their Reading EOG.  Students will take their Math EOG on Thursday, May 30th and their NC Final Exam for Social Studies on Friday, May 31st.

I have just a few things to remind you of during testing.  Help your student to be ON TIME and ready to succeed! Cell phones need to be powered down and in lockers at 8:30 AM. Please leave blankets and other unnecessary objects at home. Remind your student to store backpacks in lockers before the test begins, and please help your student remember to have their charger and laptop.

Additionally, I have an exciting update to share with you regarding construction on our campus.

Excavation of the Asheville Middle School athletic field has begun.  The scoreboard installation for the facility is also currently in review, and our contractor will soon begin updating our lighting and electrical needs.

Work will continue next week.  Our contractors will accommodate the student testing schedule.

Construction will continue on June 12th throughout the summer from 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM.

By working with the contractor and the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, we have been able to adjust working hours and anticipate our student-athletes can begin practicing on the field starting August 3rd.

The AMS softball field dugouts were also completed this week.  Additionally, the softball outfield was graded and hydro-seeded.  The infield is almost finished, and the contractor’s next steps will include blending the infield mix with dirt, surveying and installing the bases and installing the remained of the outfield fence.

Upon completion, Asheville Middle School will have an outstanding athletic facility for our students, school community and the City of Asheville.

As always thank you for all you do to make our community stronger - Cougar Pride!

April Dockery, Principal of Asheville Middle School
