Claxton Elementary Celebrated its Centennial!

On April 13th, 2024, 100 years of history came alive at Claxton Elementary as the school community gathered to commemorate a century of excellence in education. In partnership with the UNC Asheville Center for Diversity Education, the Centennial event was a momentous occasion filled with speakers, performers, and a captivating historical gallery walk, all highlighting the rich legacy of Claxton Elementary.

The highlight of the event was the historical gallery walk, where attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the captivating story of Claxton Elementary's journey through the decades. We'd like to thank the UNC Asheville CDE who curated the timeline and oral histories which told the story of our 100 year old public elementary school. These exhibits recognized the school’s history within the context of the greater community, including its acknowledgment of Stephens-Lee High School, the school for Black students prior to integration whose architect, Ronald Greene, designed both Claxton Elementary and Stephens-Lee High. The gallery showcased archival photographs, documents, and artifacts, offering a glimpse into the school's past and the many lives it has touched over the years. From the founding days to significant milestones, each display painted a vivid picture of Claxton's evolution and enduring impact on the community. In addition to the speakers and historical exhibits, the Centennial event featured student showcases that were a testament to Claxton's commitment to honoring its history. Each grade worked diligently on projects that paid homage to the school's heritage, showcasing their creativity and dedication to preserving the spirit of Claxton through art, poetry, and multimedia presentations. From timelines documenting key moments in Claxton's history to artistic interpretations of its founding principles, the student showcases were a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy that Claxton continues to uphold.

As the event drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of pride and nostalgia among attendees, reflecting on the past century while looking ahead to the future with optimism and determination. The Centennial event was not only a celebration of Claxton's illustrious history but also a reaffirmation of its enduring commitment to excellence, community, and the transformative power of education in Asheville City Schools.
